How and why it all began

You can’t create a leader in a classroom.  Management is not a science, nor a profession.  It is a practice – it has to be appreciated through experience, in context.

The vision

Fifteen years ago, IMPM co-founder and world-renowned management thinker Henry Mintzberg, professor at McGill University (Canada) and author of Managers not MBAs, set out to change management education.

IMPM is born

He partnered with Jonathan Gosling of Lancaster University Management School in the United Kingdom. Together, they decided to break from the status quo and develop a renewed form of management education.

They gathered like-minded colleagues from around the world, including Hiroyuki Itami from Hitotsubashi University, Japan, Roger Bennett from McGill University, Heinz Thanheiser from INSEAD, and Ramesh Mehta from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, with support from Bill Litwack.

The outcome of this collaboration first saw light in 1996, when the first annual class was held.

Today, the world-class partners involved in the IMPM program are:

This collaboration is a unique endeavour in that there is no lead school – the IMPM was designed as a true international partnership and remains so well into its second decade. The IMPM partners, whole-heartedly committed to the challenge from the outset, have continued to develop and refine the program over the years.

Consequently, each module represents the culture and values of the host country, and is built with input from local business. The outcome is a truly multicultural program and the only partnership of its kind anywhere in the world.

IMPM today

Since its foundation, the IMPM has helped shape the management techniques of participants from over 50 leading companies and organizations around the world. In addition, the IMPM experience has had a significant impact on their professional as well as personal lives.

A change in perspective

In the beginning, Henry Mintzberg and his colleagues’ philosophy of learning from experience, was viewed as unorthodox. Today, it is considered visionary and Henry has become one of the most influential figures in the field of management education and development.

In addition, the IMPM continues to set the standard, as many traditional management education programs seek to emulate its approach, in order to bring out the more thoughtful side of management.
